2023 Monthly Programs

Veterans' Voices

November 8, 2023 | presented by AGS member Stuart Murray

In May 1944, six young men at age 17 left Albuquerque High School before graduation to join the Navy. Being under age, they would have had to ask their parents’ permission to enlist. Their parents’ decision to let their sons go in harms way must have weighed heavily on them, but WW2 was being fought on two fronts. These six individuals went to Santa Fe and enlisted in the US Navy and would go on to serve and be honorably discharged at the end of WW2. This program will look at where they served and what happened when they returned to civilian life.

You Can Write Your Family History

October 11, 2023 | pesented by AGS member Molly Shannon

You CAN write your family history, whether it is a “just the facts” approach of ‘begats’ and vital statistics; a collection of character studies; a memoir; or a creative non-fiction look at your ancestors set in the times and places in which they lived.
In this talk, Molly will share her journey in writing the first two volumes of her family history. She will discuss research methods and sources, organization (digital and print) and the need for documentation and citations.
You will hear about the decisions she made as the book evolved and her travels to places where her ancestors lived. Publishing woes and successes will also be covered.
There will be a time for Q&A.

Understanding the Genealogical Proof Standard

September 13, 2023 | presented by AGS members Philip Spivey, Sue Johnston and Laura Weber

Building family trees can be great fun. But how do we know the information in that tree is correct? The further back we go, the fewer records we usually find and sometimes we must build a case on fragments of information.
The September presentation will be on establishing proof. This will be your chance to ask questions and get answers on what evidence is needed to be reasonably sure your tree is accurate. There will be a panel discussion on the genealogical proof standard with Sue Johnston, Laura Weber and Philip Spivey.
The basis for that discussion will be the articles in our most recent eJournal. A link to download a copy of that eJournal is provided below. If you really want to get the most out of this upcoming presentation and discussion, we encourage you to take a moment to read those articles. It will be an opportunity for you to familiarize yourself with the concepts we will be discussing and how you can apply them to your research. It will also give you a head start on building questions for discussion.

Summer Stories

August 9, 2023 | presented by AGS members

For many years, we have had an annual storytelling meeting where we can share our accomplishments with like-minded family researchers. Since many of us are in families who are not enthusiastic about family history research, we need to take time to listen, encourage, help, rejoice, or sympathize with each other. We’ll divide into small groups that allow everyone to tell of their recent genealogical adventures. We’ll also collect ideas for next year’s programs.
This event was in-person only and was not recorded.
