Gretchen Ward is a retired archaeologist and park ranger who spent most of her career with the National Park Service, including eight National Park units and offices – returning to Albuquerque three different times: twice for jobs and the last time to finally retire. She also worked for several other agencies along the way and was an American Sign Language interpreter before starting her federal career.
Gretchen is originally from San Diego. She was privileged to grow up in a multigenerational household hearing the tales of her maternal grandmother who lived with the family. Her interest in genealogy was further encouraged
by visits with extended family and annual family reunions where she listened to relatives share their lives and adventures. She is still trying to figure out if the stories are true about her various ancestors’ involvement in horse thievery, an Irish political assassination, the smuggling of a soldier out of Europe in a basket, and if there really were nine brothers who were whalers in Massachusetts – not to mention a possible Mayflower connection.
Since her retirement in 2018, Gretchen has continued to pursue her love of family history, archaeology, and gardening.
Gretchen was elected as one of two Directors-at-Large who acts as the face of AGS to all members. So please be sure to reach out to her with any concerns, needs or ideas you might have so that she can pass them along to the Executive Board.
Please welcome Gretchen to the 2026 Board of Directors!
