About AGS

The Albuquerque Genealogical Society was formed in 1972 with three objectives in mind:

  • To promote genealogy and the importance of understanding our family histories
  • To help educate genealogists and others in how to research family history
  • To support the genealogical collection and services of the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library System as a way to help our community explore family history

While we are based in Albuquerque, our goal is to help people research a wide range of geographical locations, ethnicities and cultures.

How Do We Help?

eNewsletter

Starting in June 2021, we have a monthly newsletter, sent to members by email. Email is also regularly used for announcements of meetings and other information. For members who do not have access to email, it is possible to make arrangements to receive a hard copy of the newsletter.

Free Consultations

Twice a month, we host free one-on-one help sessions for both members and the general public. This is your time to get answers to specific questions, research advice or simply to brainstorm challenges with a fellow researcher. These sessions are now being held virtually via Zoom. This is a great way to share computer screens for a better experience.

Webinars

At least once a month, we host a webinar on various topics related to Genealogy, DNA and Family History. The presenters are a mix of our knowledgeable members and an exciting slate of Nationally known speakers that are considered some of the best in their fields.

Special Interest Groups

For those wanting a deeper dive into a particular aspect of genealogy, we have groups dedicated to specific interest that meet each month (currently by Zoom). Topics include DNA, Military research and Celtic research. The groups are open to both members and nonmembers.

Genealogy Center at the Albuquerque Public Library

The Genealogy Center is located on the second floor of the Albuquerque Public Library. There is a substantial collection of research material, much of which has never been digitized and is only available here. This includes resources on both U.S. and international research, as well as sources for Albuquerque and New Mexico. The Albuquerque Public Library also offers access to a wide range of useful databases, including free use of Ancestry Library Edition, Fold3, and New Mexico newspapers on NewspaperARCHIVE.

ABCs of DNA

Each month, there is a webinar on a specific aspect of DNA. These are typically presented by Albuquerque Genealogical Society members with particular expertise and experience in these areas.

AGS Publications

In past years, we have published over 100 books with information of value to genealogists researching family in New Mexico, especially in Albuquerque. Now those books have been put online to make them more widely available.

Genealogy Resources

Our website contains a substantial list of links and research aids. This is in addition to those provided by the Albuquerque Public Library.

Genealogy Center Acquisitions

We provide funds for the Genealogy Center to acquire genealogy-related material for use by all library patrons. Here’s how you can help.
